Il Google PageRank
Google PageRank ™ is an indicator on a scale from 0 to 10 of the importance of a site.
The scale is non-linear, so between 5 and 6 there is a difference of significance much bigger than 0 to 1. Value 10 is very high and in the world there are 17 sites that reach it, including twitter.com and intel.com
The value of the PageRank is the result of a Stanford University patented algorithm that places greater importance on sites that receive multiple inbound links from other sites (backlinks).
However, not all backlinks are the same. Links coming from the best sites are worth more than links from sites of little importance. For example, a backlinks to the site of an IT store from a famous hardware manufacturer would count as thousands of links from other less known or pertinent sites.
What is of interest to our SEO goal is that, in the same way as all other factors, a site with a higher PageRank will appear in Google searches in a better position than a site with the lowest PageRank.
